These remains are of the largest lead smelting plant of its day, one of the earliest in the country. The remains were in a very poor state of repair.
The arched structure carried the horizontal flues from the smelting plant to the vertical flues above the site. The project required specialist knowledge in conservation techniques to properly specify the repair works. The latter was carried out by a specialist contracting builder.
The project was funded through the HLF. This project was presented with a CENE award for conservation on 2015. The project was nominated for the prestigious Historic England 'Angel Award'.
