Historic England Funded projects
Works to consolidate Low Friarside, a medieval chapel have been completed. The works included carefully consolidation of the historic fabric, which included the introduction of a turf 'soft' cappint to protect the wall heads. The project has also been used as a test site for the use of 'hot mix' lime mortars, so their performance can be monitored over the coming years and compared with the natural hydraulic mortar more usually used in the consolidation of stonework.
The works to the bottle kilns at Corbridge have been completed. The kilns have been subject to the removal of vegetation and repointing of the brickwork to arrest the decay and deterioration of the existing mortar. The project included a course on the use of lime mortars for bricklaying apprentices.
Works to Marsden Lime Kilns are expected to start on site 2016. The project will be undertaking essential repairs which will consolidate the historic fabric remains and arrest any further deterioration. The project has required careful consideration of underground archaeology and ecology.
