St Patrick's, Felling
The original sanctuary was impractical: it was small and circulation was restricted with a temporary altar and the sanctuary steps.
As part of the re-ordering, the parish wanted to retain the essential character of the space, along with the historically important artefacts: the pulpit, communion rails, the original 19C altar to the rear, etc. which had survived earlier re-ordering. The design relocated the communion rails to create a discreet space with the original altar.
The pulpit was dismantled, the base used as the new altar and the upper sections re-used for the lectern. The sanctuary was extended to create a more practical space. Recently, a project to repair the external stone steps was completed funded through the HLF Places of Worship Scheme.
